Haiku Code - A Haiku IDE

Haiku Code - A Haiku IDE

An Xcode-style IDE, native to Haiku.

HaikuCode is an integrated development environment for Haiku OS, written in C++17 against the public Haiku API, with no Qt. It is modeled on Xcode's workflow: one window with a navigator, an editor, an inspector and a debug area. It is an alpha, early and small, and so far it has been built, run and packaged on a single machine.

Where it stands

HaikuCode has one window, with a navigator, an editor, an inspector and a debug area, a toolbar with Build, Run, Stop and Debug, and a scheme pop-up. Projects are organised as targets, configurations and schemes.

It is version 1.0.3-alpha. That is an alpha, early and small, and the honest state is this: it has been built, run and packaged on one machine only, running Haiku R1/beta6 (hrev60299, x86_64, gcc 13.3.0). Expect rough edges.

What it does

Edit

C, C++ and .rdef syntax highlighting, a gutter with line numbers and inline error badges, tabs, a jump bar with a symbol pop-up, a Find bar, atomic saves that keep BFS attributes, and reload when a file changes on disk. There is no code completion and no code folding.

Build and run

A .hcproj project file, four new-project templates (application, command-line tool, shared library, static library), a Build Settings editor and target membership. Build, Clean, Run and Stop go through a generated Makefile and make -j. Compiler errors land in an Issues navigator, and a Console accepts stdin. You can import an existing makefile-engine Makefile or a Haiku Jamfile, and there is an Open Recent menu.

Schemes

A scheme editor holds a configuration for each action (Build, Run, Debug, Test), with arguments, environment variables and a working directory.

Debug

The debugger drives gdb from HaikuPorts through its machine interface, not Haiku's own Debugger. You get gutter breakpoints, a Breakpoints navigator, stack frames, an expandable Variables outline, step over, into and out, continue, pause and stop. Variable expansion has only been partly exercised.

Find, Git and tests

Project-wide find and Replace All, as plain text without regular expressions. A Symbols navigator uses ctags when it is installed and a built-in scanner otherwise. A Git navigator shows the branch and the changed files, with a diff against HEAD and change bars in the gutter, and commits the files you select with a message. It does not pull, push, branch or discard. A CppUnit target type comes with a generated runner, a Tests navigator and Product > Test (Cmd+U).

Previews

Markdown opens beside a live preview (CommonMark plus tables, strikethrough, task lists and autolinks) in three layouts with scroll sync; images are not loaded yet. JSON files get a value tree with inline parse errors.

Claude chat

New in 1.0.3 and only partly exercised, a chat navigator (Cmd+9) talks to Claude with your own Anthropic API key, kept in Haiku's key store. It can read the project, search, build, run tests and propose changes as diffs that you apply or reject. A Mode menu offers Plan, Ask, Allow and Auto, and it asks before reading anything outside the project. Conversations are not saved and there is no cost display.

And

Nine navigator tabs, an in-app user guide, English and German, and a vector HVIF icon.

Platforms

HaikuCode runs on Haiku, and only on Haiku. It ships as an x86_64 .hpkg, haikucode-1.0.3~alpha-1-x86_64.hpkg.

pkgman install gdb
pkgman install ctags

gdb is needed for debugging; ctags is optional. There is no HaikuDepot listing.

Planned

These are plans, with no dates: watch expressions, watchpoints, conditional breakpoints, register and memory views in the debugger, regular-expression find, git pull, push and branch, saved chat conversations and a cost display, and images in the Markdown preview.

Who it is for

Haiku developers who like Xcode's single-window workflow and want build, debug, find, git and tests in one native app.

People happy to try an alpha, who report what breaks.

It is not a replacement for anything yet, and it is not for people who need a mature, widely tested tool today.

Licence and availability

The binaries are commercial for now, because the package includes the vendored Markedly code under its commercial option. The source repository is private. Alpha builds are available on request.
