Who Am I to discuss the merits of Windows versus MacOS X?
I am first and foremost, a geek and a "power user" of both environments.
For the past 10 years, I have been writing software, installing
and managing mixed networks. I have used, managed and installed
a myriad of environments during the past 15 years. These include
QNX, BeOS, OS/2, Windows, MacOS (Classic), Linux, Solaris, AIX,
OS/400, OpenStep and MacOS X. Am I an "Industry Expert"? Probably
not, because I lack that academic background to be taken serious
by the people who haven't spent any time working in the industry.
The other problem that many will see with my positions on this
comparison is that I am not a serious gamer, I don't evaluate the
machines and environments for gamers. In this day and age, I cannot
imagine not using a $200 console as my gaming platform anyways.
On the other hand, I do have intimate knowledge of the operating
systems in question. During the past 5 years I have been working
with Stardock Systems, the makers of WindowBlinds, developing Windows
software. I've done alot of development and work with Windows.
During the past 2 years I've been using an Apple PowerBook G4 as
my primary computer, running the latest OS X builds. During that
time, I have also had a Windows laptop side by side with it. A
Dell Inspiron was it's companion for the first year. A Toshiba
Satellite took over the Windows XP and Server 2003 duties about
5 months ago. All during that time, I also have a pair of desktops
tucked away in the house, running completely headless, one running
Linux, Apache & Oracle, the other running Windows 2000 Server,
IIS and SQL Server. These I use via VNC, Terminal Services or SSH
sessions. I think this will give you some perspective on my background.
Now let's get to the meat of my comments.
